Ralph's Story
Endosopic spinal surgery

greeneRiding motorcycles has been Ralph Greene's passion since he was 12 years old. He loves taking long trips on his Harley, and has ridden in all 50 states. So in 2010, when a herniated disc made it too painful to ride, he felt like a part of his life had come to an end.

"I was in such misery that I didn't want to get out of bed. I never expected to get on my bike again," Ralph said.

Ralph turned to the physicians at Peninsula Orthopaedic Associates, who had successfully repaired a torn meniscus in his knee the year before. Dr. Scott C. McGovern recommended a new, minimally invasive procedure called endoscopic spinal surgery. This procedure protects muscles and other tissues by using small incisions and a miniature camera to repair the damaged disc.

Ralph wanted to try the procedure, not least because he'd be able to be awake the whole time and it required a significantly shorter stay in the hospital. He says, "It was definitely the right choice for me. In six hours time I walked out of the hospital, pain-free." Within a month, he was back on his Harley again, and he's been riding ever since, thanks to Dr. McGovern and the team at POA.
