Message to Our Patients from
Peninsula Orthopaedic Associates
Effective April 1, 2009,
Peninsula Orthopaedic Associates, P.A., (POA) will
no longer be a participating provider with the
United Health Care provider network. This includes
HMO and PPO plans administered by United Health
Care, including some self-funded employer health
plans.
United Health Care has
consistently been among the lowest paying insurers
in our region. Unfortunately, their payment rates
are no longer adequate to cover our cost to provide
services.
The Maryland Physician
Workforce Study recently reported that the Eastern
Shore of Maryland faces critical physician shortages
that are growing worse due to poor physician
reimbursement, which ranks in the bottom 25%
nationally. Physicians will not come to Maryland,
and many are leaving to practice elsewhere, because
they cannot afford to practice here. We do not
believe it is fair that for-profit companies like
United Health Care pay less than their competitors,
when the direct result is that your access to care
will be reduced.
For services provided after
April 1, you may need to submit your claim directly
to United Health Care in order for it to be paid.
The benefit level you receive will depend upon your
particular plan; please consult your plan documents
or human resources department with any questions.

Please note that under Maryland
law, HMO members have the right to geographically
accessible care. If you feel your rights as an HMO
member are not being protected, we advise that you
contact the Maryland Insurance Administration
(800-492-6116).

inconvenience this may cause.
